Volcano Mahameru Outburst in the Southeast Asian nation Prompts Evacuations

The nation's Semeru volcano, the tallest summit on the island of Java, has exploded, blanketing several villages with falling ash, prompting evacuations and leading authorities to raise the warning to the highest level.

The mountain in the province of East Java released blistering plumes of hot ash and a combination of rock, lava and gas that moved up to 7km down its sides several times from noon to dusk, while a thick column of hot clouds rose 2km into the air, as stated by the nation's geological authority.

The outbursts that occurred throughout the day compelled officials to increase the mountain's warning status on two occasions, from the third-highest level to the top level, the authority reported. No deaths or injuries have been reported.

More than 300 inhabitants in the three villages most at risk in the area of Lumajang region were evacuated to government shelters, as mentioned by a representative for the national disaster mitigation agency.

He stated that increased activity of the volcano on the afternoon of Wednesday led officials to widen the hazard area to 5 miles from the summit. People were advised to keep away from an area along the Kobokan River, which is the route of the molten rock stream, as scorching gases flowed down Semeru’s slopes.

Videos on social media showed a thick plume of volcanic dust sweeping through a wooded ravine to a river beneath a bridge. Residents, some with faces smeared with ash and rain, escaped to temporary shelters or departed for other safe areas.

Regional news outlets reported that authorities were struggling to save about 178 people trapped on the 12,060-foot peak at the Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post. The party included 137 hikers, 15 carriers, seven escorts and six tourism officials, according to an official with the protected area.

“They remain secure at Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post,” an official said in a video statement. He noted the post was situated 4.5km from the summit on the northern slope of the volcano, which is outside the trajectory of the hot cloud flow that was observed moving to the southeast direction. Bad weather and rain required the group to remain overnight there, he added.

The volcano, also called Mahameru, has erupted numerous times in the last two centuries. However, as is the situation with many of the 129 active volcanoes in the archipelago, thousands of people continue to live on its productive highlands.

The mountain's previous significant explosion was in late 2021, when 51 people were killed and hundreds others were injured and settlements were buried in thick mud. The event forced the relocation of over ten thousand people from their houses.

Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 280 million people, is located along the Pacific “ring of fire”, a curved series of tectonic boundaries, and is susceptible to seismic events and volcanic activity.
