Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will End... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the acclaimed program wrapping up—and Season 2 officially in the works—the creative team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
One could easily to get swayed by the rampant praise and online debates about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“It feels like an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Will the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering the writers aren’t being guided by public opinion, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… sort of.
“There are some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a solid concept for a better idea. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Then again, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Alternatively, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
