Two Cuba-Headed Humanitarian Sailboats Listed Unaccounted For subsequent to Setting Sail from Mexican Waters.
A large-scale search and recovery mission is currently in progress in the Caribbean region for a pair of lost sailboats carrying aid cargo traveling from Mexico to Havana.
Naval Rescue Missions Launched
Mexico has dispatched naval assets and search planes to locate the two vessels, which were carrying no fewer than 9 personnel, per a navy statement.
The boats had been projected to arrive in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their docking, the navy said.
The Situation of Aid to the Nation
Cuba has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the island struggles through multiple national electricity failures.
"The captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are equipped with proper safety equipment and communication devices," a spokesperson for the convoy stated.
The nine crew members are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Officials said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their embassy officials.
"We are co-operating fully with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.
Earlier Humanitarian Shipment
Earlier in the week, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tonnes of donated goods to the country.
That boat, called "a new Granma" following the name of the yacht in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, carried solar panels, medicines, baby formula, bikes and foodstuffs.
Wider International Context
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded attempts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, coinciding with the time a energy blockade on the island nation was initiated.
Global bodies have since raised alarms about "dire" lack of essential goods, with more than fifty thousand operations cancelled in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.
Diplomatic measures have increased lately, with remarks from various representatives emphasizing the complicated nature of bilateral relations.
Responding to recent proposals, a prominent Cuban official insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Indications suggest that initial phases of negotiations commenced, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.
The naval forces said it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to discover the sailboats and ensure the security of the crews.
To date, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
