The Red Devils Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.

Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack

The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major boost to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be building momentum.

Recent performances feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further business:

  1. The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the American league, added: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
