The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Claims Parent Company Blocked Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Flavor
The co-founders behind the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has announced how parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch of a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that established the business with his partner, disclosed how he will independently develop the controversial product within an individual collection highlighting causes the company has been barred from speaking out about.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Founders and Parent Company
This latest development intensifies the continuing disagreement between the internationally recognized ice cream maker and Unilever, the British packaged goods corporation that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
The co-founders have asserted how Unilever along with its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".
Watermelon Sorbet becoming an Emblem for Solidarity
The entrepreneur stated through social media that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for public suggestions regarding naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder stated in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become an emblem of solidarity with Palestinians because of its colors, that closely resemble the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement and Current Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in territories occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company transferring the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
The new product line is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which was first created several years back to support former political contender Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts plus Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated how he will develop additional frozen dessert varieties that address concerns which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, after many years with the organization, citing worries that its independence was compromised following corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen remarked that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to keep working within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can actualise the social mission, the values that established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he told journalists.
