Prison Surprise: The FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life Behind Bars

He fought justice and the legal system won.

Two months after being handed a 27-year sentence for attempting to “eradicate” Brazil’s democratic institutions, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro at last appears destined for incarceration.

Anticipated Jailing

The adjudicated instigator – who had been subject to residential detention in his mansion while a number of legal procedures and petitions unfold – is broadly anticipated to be incarcerated in the near future, amid increasing talk that he will be transferred to a well-known top-security penitentiary.

Past Remarks on Inmates

Over Bolsonaro’s long political career, the right-wing ex- soldier displayed little sympathy for Brazil’s inmates.

“For what reason must we offer these scoundrels a easy time?” he previously wondered. “They ought to simply be fucked, end of story. That’s what I reckon.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to finish behind bars, all you have to do is to avoid rape, abduction or theft.”

Incarceration Facility Discussion

But the prospect of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has appalled supporters, several of whom this week inspected the facility in an obvious effort to dissuade the high court from transferring him there.

Izalci Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was one of the visitors, said he predicted the 70-year-old politician to be imprisoned in the next 10 days and worried his assigned prison could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s serious gut issues – the outcome of a almost deadly assault during the 2018 presidential election race – signified it would be risky to keep the one-time head of state there. “His condition is very grave. He won’t be able to manage if they send him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” said the senator, who also voiced anxiety about overcrowded cells and the condition of jail cuisine.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas noted observing cells accommodating forty detainees: “That’s virtually one square meter per detainee.

“We spoke to the inmates and they grumble, unsurprisingly, of the awful cuisine,” remarked the senator.

Supporters Speak Out

He is not the lone figure expressing views prior to the ex-leader's predicted imprisonment.

Writing in a leading daily, one more backer, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” public service and alleged Brazil was about to witness “the greatest political injustice in its history”.

“It is an wrong that eats away the hearts of millions people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.

Mixed General Response

That may be true given the substantial support Bolsonaro retains on the conservative side. But his predicted jailing has also pleased the spirits of numerous individuals who think he should be jailed for plotting to prevent his successor from taking power – and also scheming to have him murdered.

Congressman Otoni, a politician for the incumbent president's allied group, commented: “No one wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in a hole. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be sent in solitary confinement. No one wishes Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We want him to get proper handling – but dignified treatment in prison. He can’t continue being his personal jailer for his whole life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years praising the harsh conditions of inmates, had unexpectedly realized to their privileges. “Just now has the conservative fringe – which has always argued that human rights were not for offenders – chosen to visit a jail to discover what conditions are truly like,” he said.

“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “degrading, demeaning conduct”.

Possible Jail Conditions

In spite of speculation that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now houses about fourteen thousand inmates, his probable location seems to be a close prison for police officers and other “particular” inmates called Papudinha (Small Papuda).

His potential cell are considerably more pleasant than those in the main prison, although nonetheless a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro had while residing in the impressive leader's home, around a short distance away.

According to information, the accommodation Bolsonaro could expect to inhabit in Papudinha measures about 24 square meters – approximately the area of a couple of car spots – and features a 12 sq metre WC with a bathing area and a 12 square meter terrace. “The ex-president might be authorized to have a set and even a small fridge in his quarters as long as they were donated by his relatives,” the report indicated.

Political Reactions

The lawmaker condemned the talked-about idea to send the ex-president to Papuda as “an act of retaliation” on the part of the supreme court judge who oversaw Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will rule on his fate in the {
