Forecasters are saying a frosty start to the new year, with snowfall expected across much of the UK. Revelers are being urged to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Go Ahead In Spite of Alerts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay festivities are planned to proceed, unlike last year's calling-off. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," said the national forecaster.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks shows, with dry conditions and clear skies. Temperatures are expected to be low, so warm wraps essential, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for Friday

Heading into Friday, advisories have been issued across Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• People are advised to allow extra time for journeys on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are likely on trains and buses.

Temperatures Expected to Drop Further

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Health Advisories Released

At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this meant the weather was expected to trigger notable consequences across health and social care services. This involves a potential rise in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.

The guidance for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in good health, dressing for the cold is completely essential.
