Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the individuals who are known so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She described the events before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
