The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
