Democrats Condemn Trump After He States They Should Face Execution
Democratic officials demonstrated fury after Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be arrested and penalized "through capital punishment" following their release of a controversial video.
The Content That Triggered the Controversy
The video footage, shared on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic congress members who in the past served in military or defense capacities.
"Like us, you all swore an oath to protect and defend this national charter," the lawmakers declared in the 90-second video. "And right now, the risks to our democratic foundation aren't just from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our laws are unambiguous, you can reject illegal orders, you can decline improper directives, you should refuse unlawful commands. No one has to carry out commands that break the law or our national charter."
Trump's Furious Response
The clip reportedly trigger a heated reply from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he wrote: "This represents really serious, and Risky to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Leaders Answer
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats published a combined statement condemning the statements.
"Political violence has no position in America," they declared. "Representatives who appeared in the video all acted our nation with great patriotism and distinction. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's appalling and risky death threats against members of Congress, and urge GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to guarantee the security of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these extreme digital publications and retract his violent rhetoric before he leads to violence," the announcement continued.
Lawmakers' Firm Answer
The officials who appeared in the video also issued a statement.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who care for this country and made an pledge to defend and defend the constitution of the United States," they stated. "That oath continues forever, and we aim to keep it. No intimidation, coercion, or call for violence will prevent us from that sacred duty."
"What's most telling is that the president views it subject to penalty by execution for us to reiterate the law," they added. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their backs as they execute their oath to the constitution and duty to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "All citizens must unite and denounce the former president's demands for our death and political violence. This is a period for moral clarity."
Additional Partisan Comments
The Opposition leader also censured Trump's remarks and published on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is calling for the execution of elected officials."
He stated: "This is an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should censure this immediately and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This represents very risky, you have prominent officials of the government instructing military personnel to ignore directives, I think that's unprecedented in American history."
The GOP official also according to sources stated to the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the crime of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to analyze the terminology and determine all that."
Executive Branch Response
During a White House press conference on that day, when questioned by a reporter, "Would the president want to kill elected officials?", the White House press secretary answered: "Absolutely not."
"We should understand about what the president is responding to," the representative declared. "You have sitting members of the US Congress who coordinated to orchestrate a video message to personnel of the national defense, to serving soldiers encouraging them to defy the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She said: "The purity of our defense system rests on the command structure, and if that structure is compromised, it can cause casualties, it can cause confusion, and that's what these elected officials ... are basically encouraging."
