Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family go about their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its current layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to enjoy the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
